Smeal’s Accounting Department focuses on the development and interpretation of financial information critical to managerial decision-making. The accounting faculty continually strive for excellence in various fields of research, including accounting ethics, auditing, management, accounting, financial reporting, forecasting, insider trading, security markets, and tax policy. The Ph.D. accounting program emphasizes research to cultivate competitive candidates and is led by dedicated faculty, who share their knowledge and experience with their students.
Faculty members in Smeal’s Finance Department provide research and teaching expertise in a variety of areas emphasizing corporate finance, financial services, international finance, and investment management. Smeal has built an international reputation for financial research, especially in the areas of corporate financial policy and the operation and regulation of securities markets. Our faculty publish their research in a variety of leading academic journals, earning the department international recognition from academic and professional organizations. They also direct and participate in research and teaching programs sponsored by the Center for Study of Financial Markets, the Smeal College Trading Room, and the Nittany Lion Fund.
The faculty which make up Smeal’s Department of Risk Management have roots in risk analysis in a variety of business environments. The research and disciplinary focus of the department is on risk assessment, mitigation and management connecting disciplines such as actuarial science, business law, decision analysis, insurance, international business, and real estate. Faculty have a reputation for teaching excellence at all levels at Smeal (undergraduate, masters, and doctoral courses) and all units have strong research records and international reputations. For example, a 2008 report in the Journal of Real Estate Research, ranked our real estate group as the fourth most-published real estate department in the world. There are also two research centers in the department: the Institute for Real Estate Studies and the Laboratory for Economics Management and Auctions. The department is the home of two very successful minors in Smeal: the Legal Environment of Business minor and the International Business minor.
According to joint research from Texas A&M University and the University of Florida, Smeal’s Management and Organization Department is ranked No. 1 in research productivity, having published more research papers in the top management journals than any other management department in the United States and Canada from 2005 to 2008. Our distinguished and decorated faculty members conduct research spanning all disciplines, including collaboration, conflict and negotiation, diversity, entrepreneurship, ethical decision making, executive compensation, IPOs, organizational behavior and design, human resources management, and strategic management.
The marketing faculty at Smeal are consistently ranked among the top 20 marketing departments in the United States in research output. Smeal faculty members are among the world’s leading scholars in business-to-business marketing, consumer marketing, firm interaction, and quantitative modeling of buyer behavior. They publish theoretically rigorous and managerially relevant research that has significant contributions to marketing literature. Smeal’s marketing faculty also direct the Institute for the Study of Business Markets, a world-renowned business-to-business marketing research center.
According to a survey conducted by AMR Research, Smeal’s Supply Chain and Information Systems Department has the best supply chain program in the United States in terms of industry value, program depth, and program scope. Smeal’s world-class faculty has industry-driven research interests that span end-to-end supply chain process integration enabled by information technology. Core processes encompass buy (source), make, deliver (demand fulfillment), return (sustainment), new product development, and customer relationships. Smeal is also home to the Center for Supply Chain Research, one of the nation's leading institutes dedicated to supply chain management research and education.
